PAII - its not just for dessert

We just returned from the PAII conference at Disney World in California. You may be wondering what is PAII? You may have seen their logo on many Bed and Breakfast websites. PAII is a national organization for B&Bs and full service Inns. This organization provides innkeepers with education allowing us to stay in tune with new trends in the industry.

This was our first PAII conference; we had a blast and learned a lot. We even had enough time to check out Disney World. The conference included educational sessions in many aspects of innkeeping including marketing, operations, technology, legal, financial and of course breakfast. The conference also included a trade show, we were able to purchase some great items for the Bed and Breakfast.

Of course it wasnt all work! Tim entered the Idea Fair before we left, his idea along with 14 others was chosen to be presented and voted on at the Conference. Tims great idea was to automate the lights, thermostats, and fireplaces in the guest rooms. For example, we currently only push one button to turn all of the lamps in our living room and breakfast room. It is a great way to save time and energy. We love saving energy up here in Vermont, it is how we keep Vermont greener then the rest of the country. Tim WON the contest with his smooth presentation and great idea. We won 3 Roomba Vacuum Cleaners from iRobot!!!

We also attended PAIIs Birthday Bash. They were celebrating their 20 year Anniversary with a party complete with drinks, dessert and games. Since we are not much for musical chairs, I entered the hula hoop contest. I was a finalist! Unfortunately there were some better hula hoopers then me. Well you win some and you lose some.

Congratulations to our recent guests Josh and Mieko who got engaged on their visit to Brattleboro! We wish them the best of luck and were honored to have them celebrate this special day with us at Forty Putney Road!

Sugaring time - the sweetest time of year...

Its sugaring time again in Vermont. For those who don't know, that the time of year when the maple sap runs from the trees into buckets all over the state, waiting to be collected and "cooked" into delicious maple syrup. The smell (as I am sure you can imagine) is amazing. Several sugar houses offer tours and demonstrations in our area. We took a ride up to Harlowes Sugar House, which is just up the road from us, to check out the operation.

Amy recently entered the "Pancakes with Personality" competition sponsored by Bed and Breakfast.com. She made it all the way to the semi finals, where she received third place for her Almond Amaretto Pancakes! While we were disappointed that she didn't win her deserved first :) it was exciting to be even recognized among so many seasoned innkeepers! Over 100 innkeepers entered nationwide, the local paper even ran a story about it - below. So, just one more great reason to visit Forty Putney Road - Some of Americas BEST Pancakes!

Alicis Bistro

As far as fine dining goes in Brattleboro, Alici’s Bistro ranks in our top 5 favorite places. The atmosphere is unmatched here in Brattleboro. Alici’s is located on the Connecticut River, with a view of the mountain tucked in the beautiful natural landscape of the area. The outside decks only enhance the experience. Several nights a week live entertainment is offered early enough to enjoy with your meal.

Skiing at Mount Snow

With all of the great snow that we have been getting, the mountains are all open and the conditions are great! We made it out to Mount Snow this past weekend (Mount Snow is an easy 20 minute ride from here on the well cleared Route 9). The conditions were great and almost the whole mountain was open (rare for this early in the season). After this weeks new snowfall...

Trimming the tree in a foot of snow

We got ourselves a Christmas tree this week. Purchased from local Dutton Farm, its a beaut. Smells great too! I love to decorate the tree and it will be fun to "spruce" the house up for the season (pun intended). We also got about a foot of snow today - click the link for photos!

Seven Barrel Brewery

Continuing on my birthday adventure, we proceeded north on 91 and went over the state line into West Lebanon, NH - this time our destination was Seven Barrel Brewery. This brew pub was strangely eclectic and a little outdated. It made a strange attempt at being and English style pub with some flowered wallpaper borders and medieval decorations. To each their own I say. We were there for the beer so I guess the atmosphere can be overlooked.

We took the plunge and finally blocked all of the rooms and took a day off, our first day off in six months. In the words of Homer Simpson “Woo Hoo”!
On November 6th, for my birthday (which is really the 7^th but we already had bookings), we went on an adventure through Southern Vermont. We started with a straight shot up 91 North to Harpoon Brewing Company in Windsor. The ride was beautiful, because the foliage was late this year, we could still enjoy the end of it with the beautiful burnt orange and red colors. We pulled into Harpoon to find we were the only customers. That’s okay more beer for us then.
